Siwa Nataraja - Bali Unmasked by Balinese Living ArtsIt is a perfect opportunity to explore behind the scene of Living Arts in Bali, the history of Ubud Royal Kingdom, Puri Kantor. The day begins just like any other day in the Balinese village. Sounds of suling bamboo flute echos in the air and creates an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Bewitched by the hypnotic rhytem of the Gamelans tune, the mask maker carves his wooden blocks at a frantic pace. Enchanting dances present the most sacred Topeng Bang, a refined interpret of the Lord Brahma, God of creation. Additional characters come alive together with the Topeng Kras, which portrays a warlike martial or Topeng Tua, a playful old man.
Artistic expression through the sacred Topeng Dances reveals contradictory aspects of the human experience. Shiva, God of creation and destruction is longing for his wife Dewi Parwati, the goddess of fertility, love and devotion. Together they form energy and power, anger and destruction.
Shiva in his manifestation as Nataraja, the lord of Dance connects religion and the arts. Nataraja is surrounded by the contrasting forces of the universe which allow him to keep dancing by the grace of Lord Shiva. The Balinese sustain their lives by way of the arts as part of a spiritual, body and mind balance on a day to day basis. You will be inspired by the exceptional talents and infectious passion of the performers and entranced by the imagination and skills of the villagers who are working behind the scenes
